I went through old newspapers today to clip out samples of old opinion columns and articles I did while working at The Times-Journal and The Sand Mountain Reporter.
Lots of memories and a bit of history recalled today.
I remember a lot of days when I had all or most of the stories on the front page. Just look at the range in this particular issue. I received awards from the Alabama Press Association for my photography as well as doing series focusing on a single issue and spot news reporting.
I became something of a local celebrity as a writer, but I also made a few enemies by reporting on governments and businesses. A good reporter cares more about getting the truth out than kissing up to those in authority. Sometimes this comes at the cost of friendships. I was more concerned with whether people respected me than liking me.
