New Trailer for Prometheus Examined
There’s a new trailer for Prometheus, and the film is looking a lot like a prequel to Alien, also directed by Ridley Scott.
The ship landing on a rocky planet, the cockpit and the cavern full of “eggs” all resemble what we’ve seen before. Then there is the unmistakeable derelict alien spacecraft where, sometime later, John Hurt’s character will meet the face-hugger alien. This looks like an origin story, and I predict it will end with the corrupt company knowing full well what they’re sending Ripley and Co. into later. Perhaps THEY set up the acoustic beacon that eventually diverts the Nostromo from their ride home.
It appears that a team from Earth visits the planetoid after finding clues about the origins of Earth’s civilization. From the looks of it, though, they don’t find instructions for a friendly hookup with E.T. but something that could threaten the future of Earth. We see the unmistakeable image of the mother alien and the alien navigator whose remains are fossilized by the time the crew of the Nostromo arrives.
We can see the Prometheus crashing into the derelict alien spacecraft. In mythology, Prometheus is a Titan who was a champion for mankind and stole fire from Zeus to give to the mortals. Zeus then punished him for his crime by having him bound to a rock while a great eagle ate his liver every day only to have it grow back to be eaten again the next day. Something tells me the crew of this new voyage is doomed, especially if their ship is seen crashing and Sigourney Weaver’s crew finds their way there without a clue of their own doom awaiting them.
I’m giddy at the prospect of seeing this story expanded. We’ve also heard rumors Scott may return to the world of Blade Runner for a sequel. Count me in!
