  • Pet “Pawrade”!
  • 5K Run for a memorial scholarship!

It all starts at 8 a.m. with the Kiwanis breakfast and the 5K run. Many of the events will end at 6 p.m., but the rock and roll concert with Luke Winslow-King and Cyril Neville starts at 8 p.m.

This has become quite an impressive event in my hometown, attracting thousands of people. It started as a replacement for the June Jam Week, which was an offshoot of the annual June Jam charity concerts that brought national attention to Fort Payne.

The Boom Days Festival has been so impressively put together that I barely even think of that connection to the past glory. The result is an annual event with some real substance that provides a great treat and calls much attention to my special community. A couple of years ago, they even added beer sales at the festival in the formerly “dry” town.

I plan to be downtown at the festival at least part of the day, but I can’t guarantee how much, as I am recovering from surgery performed earlier this week. If you see me there, please be sure to stop me and say hello! I probably WON’T be there between 11-1 because the Auburn-Clemson game will be on TV, just FYI.

And while you are visiting Fort Payne, be sure to stay overnight so you can spend Sunday exploring Little River Canyon National Preserve, DeSoto State Park and DeSoto Falls!
